Opportunities and developments in the Greek horticultural sector

The horticultural sector in Greece is on the verge of a major modernization drive. Export of fruit and vegetables from Greece has increased in recent years, despite the halt in investment in greenhouse production in recent years due to the crisis and corona. This leads to a growing demand among Greek growers for digital applications and technology. This demand will be facilitated in the coming period by European and Greek stimulus funds to further promote sustainable production among growers.

What will this mean for Dutch-Greek cooperation? On July 1, from 13:00-14:00 (14:00-15:00 Greek time) the Dutch Embassy in Greece in cooperation with the Greek Ministry of Agriculture organizes the webinar "Opportunities for Greek-Dutch partnerships to modernize the horticulture sector in Greece".

While due to the economic crisis, followed by corona, investments in greenhouse production of vegetables came to a standstill in recent years, the export of those vegetables from Greece to the Netherlands, however, increased. In the same period, we saw a strong increase in the production volume of fruit. The horticultural sector in Greece is about to embark on a major modernization drive. It is expected that, as a result of the current favorable political-economic climate, Greek horticultural entrepreneurs will invest heavily in further modernization in the coming years. This offers great opportunities for Dutch business.

Developments in Greek horticulture
Since last year, general exports of fruit and vegetables from Greece have increased sharply, and this trend is expected to continue. Important markets for vegetables are particularly Germany, Bulgaria, Poland, and Romania, while Egypt is a growth market for Greek fruit. The Netherlands is an important customer of Greek berry growers, especially of their strawberries and blueberries.

However, the productivity of Greek horticulture is still far behind that of the Netherlands. They want to change that. Greek producers are increasingly investing in high-tech greenhouses and technology, often of Dutch manufacture. With the changing market, these producers understand better than anyone that they need to modernize to meet the high standards of the retail market – both at home and abroad. This leads to increasing demand for digital applications and technology. This demand is being facilitated and stimulated by European and Greek stimulus funds to further promote sustainable production among horticulturalists.
