The United States is the main export destination with a 98% share
Mexico produced 539,000 tons of lettuce in 2020, i.e. 4.5% more than in the previous year. According to data from the Agrifood and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), Mexico's lettuce production increased at an average annual growth rate of 3.6% between 2017 and 2019. In 2017 production stood at 481,000 tons, a year later it increased to 486,000, and in 2019 it totaled 516,000 tons.
The country positioned itself as the world's ninth-biggest producer of lettuce with a 1.8% share.
Mexico mainly produces Romain and Orejona lettuces, which together account for 98% of the national harvest. They also produce Baby leaf and Escarola varieties. The crop is produced in 21 states of the country. At the end of the 2020 agricultural year, Guanajuato was the main producing entity with a 27.3% share. It was followed by Zacatecas with 17.8%, Aguascalientes with 14.8%, and Puebla with 14.2%.
According to the federal agency, Mexico exported an average of 200,000 tons of lettuce in the 2015-2020 period, where exports experienced an average annual growth rate of 11.4%. In 2020, the country exported 261,000 tons.
The main export destination for the Mexican lettuce in the 2015-2020 period was the United States, with a 98% share and an average annual growth rate of 11.3%. It was followed by Canada.
