“Limited supply means bell peppers are still priced high”

Fruit and vegetable consumption is partially dependent on the weather. That's evident now, too. Temperatures across Western Europe are low for this time of year. "It's too cold to eat fruit-vegetables," says Barry Michiels of Belgian export company Gebroeders Michiels. "We're waiting for nice weather, maybe this weekend. But that remains to be seen. The current demand for fruit-vegetables isn't bad. However, overall, prices mean growers can't earn much."

“Zucchini and eggplants are struggling. Prices are bad because demand's disappointing. For bell pepper, it's different; those prices are still high. That's because there's little supply that's slowly increasing. But due to the rather dark, cold weather, it's quite slow. It's also too cold for tomato consumption. There's plenty of supply, and there's demand. Average prices aren't high, but they aren't extremely low either. Still, it'll be nice when the sun comes out. Then everyone starts craving those tasty summer vegetables again."

“Cucumbers are still selling at rock-bottom prices. This product has truly borne the brunt of the corona crisis. I prefer to sell expensive cucumbers. But unfortunately, I can't change the supply and demand balance. Soon, the German hospitality industry will be allowed to reopen. That'll after the Netherlands and Belgium have done so. I think that'll boost the market," Barry concludes.
