What will the future of farming in Niagara look like?

As part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary Niagara Farmers’ Monthly, NiagaraThisWeek.com decided to look ahead to the next 50 years of farming, with the help of the experts at Vineland Research and Innovation Centre.

Qinglu Ying, research scientist plant production states: "The greenhouse industry is an important segment of the Canadian agri-food industry. With an increasing demand for year-round fresh fruits and vegetables, greenhouse produce will continue to play a vital role in food production and contribute to the success of this growing sector. For continued growth and to remain profitable, it is important for the industry to invest in research and development into new technologies and production approaches."

"The advancement of production-related technologies enables growers to more precisely control the growing environment and achieve a better yield for their costs. Light level and quality can now be adjusted to manipulate plant growth and nutritional profiles. Shading materials, as well as heating and cooling systems, are optimized to improve crop yield and energy use efficiency."
