Greenhouses offer tools to fight foodborne illnesses

A government report found about 9 million people get sick and more than 1,300 people die every year from eating contaminated food.

The report gathered data from the Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Department of Agriculture on foodborne illness outbreaks from 1998 through 2018.

Some consumers have started turning to produce grown in a controlled environment because it's said to be safer.

Revolution Farms first opened in 2018 and is the largest lettuce farm in Michigan.

“All of our production is done indoors as opposed to California lettuce which is grown outside in the field, probably more subject to animal interference," said Tam Serage, the head grower for Revolution Farms in Caledonia. "We harvest everything in house.”
