China: No soil needed, only spraying for vegetables growing on the "wall"

Next to a road in the agricultural area of Nangang Town, 2 steel-framed greenhouses resembling the Bird's Nest (Beijing National Stadium) and the Water Cube (National Aquatics Center) and covering an area of about 2,400 m2 is the Nangang Aeroponics Agricultural Science and Technology Demonstration Park. Walking into the greenhouses with heating, rows of the blue vegetable "walls" - 1.5 meters high triangular cultivation racks - come into view. Fresh vegetables grow on the surfaces on both sides of the planting rack, and the roots of the vegetables grow on the inside of the rack.

So, how do the vegetables grow? The real "mystery" lies in the pipes in the middle of the planting racks. The pipes run through the racks, and the nutrients are sprayed on the root system of the plants in the form of aerosol through the pipes, and the roots absorb water and nutrients to grow healthily.

The technical staff of the park say that aerosol cultivation is currently the most advanced soilless cultivation model. After the seedlings are transplanted to the planting rack, the spray device atomizes the fertilizers and sprays it directly to the roots of the plants. According to the characteristics of the different periods of the vegetable growing process, it adjusts and provides corresponding water and nutrients.

360-degree real-time monitoring is adopted in the greenhouse, and the temperature, humidity, light, and other information in the greenhouse are all summarized on the cloud platform.

It is understood that at present, the first batch of vegetables such as "Purple Leaf Kuai Cai" and "Fengshun Lettuce" in the greenhouse has entered the harvest period. The output of the first phase is expected to be about 1000 kilos, and the entire growth cycle is nearly half shorter than traditional farming. The output has increased by 3-5 times, the output value has increased by more than 10 times, and the labor cost has been reduced by more than 90%. Due to the aeroponics culture technology, the soil is isolated, so there is no soil pollution such as heavy metals, which ensures the safety and cleanliness of the vegetable.

"By introducing high-efficiency agricultural industry demonstration projects, we will increase the production capacity of the agricultural industry, increase the added value of agricultural products, and make rapid breakthroughs in the development of the agricultural industry. In the next step, Nangang Town will combine the characteristics of the enterprises to integrate the development of agriculture, culture, and tourism, and become the town's agricultural district," Li Chun, a member of the Nangang Town Party Committee, said.
