Russia: Eco-kultura to invest 153 million euros in berry cultivation

Agricultural holding Eco-kultura is planning on investing 153 million euros in the construction of a contemporary greenhouse complex aimed at growing berries in Kabardino-Balkaria (Russia). The president of the holding, Mr. Aleksandr Rudakov, and the president of the republic, Mr. Kazbek Kokoyev, have come to an agreement on the matter.

The sides have discussed cooperation in carrying out the projects on producing organic horticultural crops in the region. In particular, they touched upon the possibility of constructing the biggest berry growing greenhouse in the country. The matter will be discussed in more detail shortly.

In accordance with the official communique by Eco-kultura, the preparations for the launch of the investment project will begin this year.

The impressive production facility would occupy an acreage of 100 ha. Raspberries, strawberries, blueberries and blackberries, the most popular varieties in Russia, will be grown in the greenhouses, equipped with all modern technologies. The launch is planned for 2022.

According to the president of the AGIH Eco-kultura, Mr. Alsandr Rudakov, the current berry market capacity does not meet the requirements of the population and the food industry. The majority of the produce is grown by small enterprises in the open field, which results in unstable supplies and unpredictable quality. With that, the deliveries to the shops and markets are of a seasonal character.

It is the first project of Eco-kultura specializing in berries. Currently the holding has been producing greenhouse tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce. The president of the complex explained that the company experience in vegetable producing can be extrapolated to berry growing and it will allow the company to produce the tastiest berries with excellent organoleptic qualities and also rich in vitamins.

The production capacity is planned at the level of 5000 tons a year, with that the proportion of each variety will be approximately equal. Fresh berries will be delivered to all regions of the Russian Federation irrespective of the season. Thus, the demand of the population will be met whatever the weather.

The republic was not coincidentally chosen for the project. Such factors as favorable geographical location, average temperatures and the length of the light day have influenced the choice.
