The characteristics of the glass are important. Steven Adriaense, Van Looveren explains: “The light transmission is vital. That’s what it is all about now. The requirements are getting higher and higher these days. In order to show the product has a good light transmission, we supply the requested measurement reports with corresponding warranties to our products. All based on NEN norm 2675.”
Less demand for diffuse glass
Steven believes the demand for diffuse glass has slightly decreased. “I think it is due to some growers only having an interest in the light itself and less in the scattering and spreading of it. This is mainly the case in the Netherlands and Belgium, where you now can notice a small shift happening.”
In America and Canada, Steven doesn’t see the same trend. He emphasizes the fact that diffuse glass can still be significant: “It is still scientifically proven that more light and the scattering of that light helps the plants combat diseases and stress. I still believe in that.”
Fourth generation remains in competition
The fourth generation of a family-owned company, which is commendable, to say the least. At Van Looveren, their knowledge of horticultural glass is passed down from generation to generation. The family company continues to grow and develop. “We are very busy, which I see as a positive thing”, says Steven Adriaense of Van Looveren. “Nevertheless, market competition remains stiff”, he says.
The family company doesn’t shy away from a challenge and keeps competing with other market players. Steven: “We differentiate ourselves through our products. The difference is often where you can get your product from. Can you get it straight from the source? Good relations are essential for this.”
