High-tech farm ensures plentiful supply of blueberries from Serbia

This year is a very special year for Mokrin. In 2020 they had their first harvest season of blueberries. Located in the Vojvodina region in the country of Serbia, the company is committed to organic farming, the development of new products and efficient growing systems. Their first project is a blueberry plantation spread over 20 ha.

The plantation is designed according to the highest global standards. American blueberries are grown in high quality peat substrate, the irrigation and fertigation are computer-controlled, and the fruits are protected by an anti-hail, anti-wind, and anti-bird protective net. The plantation is designed to maximize the use of irrigation water, as the company is already aware of the importance of rationalizing the use of water for both agricultural and non-agricultural purposes.

All jobs are recorded and managed with modern software. All the electricity required for the smooth operation of the sensors, weather station, computer, pumps, and other electrically-powered equipment is produced on-site through solar panels. Excess electricity is stored in batteries installed in auxiliary facilities, which ensures the smooth operation of the entire system/plantation even when there is a lack of solar energy.

This year they harvest 34 tons of fresh blueberries, which was sold on local Serbian market. For next year, they plan to produce 100 tons of fresh blueberries, which will be offered also to other markets. In the next year, they will begin with construction of a brand new hall with cooling storage and sorting and packaging lines. The hall will be built with the highest environmentally friendly standards; they also pay special attention to the energy efficiency of cold stores and the entire building. The cost of the whole project is estimated at 1.5 million €.

With this acquisition, they will be able to meet the highest standards in the field of sorting and packaging of blueberries. That way, their customers will always get the highest quality freshly picked blueberries. They already accept orders for the next blueberry season; so far they have already sold/reserved 35% of the harvest.
