Double screens are very common in the bell pepper world, but De Groentetuin takes it a step further. Besides a double energy screen, they also use a blind.
De Groentetuin grows bell peppers on 13 ha in Merksplas (Belgium) and has made significant efforts in energy saving in recent years, for example by investing in a co-generation installation.
Mark Hoogendoorn, Holland Scherming: "With more screen options because of the installation of this third screen, the climate can be controlled even better. Quality, plant health and productivity can be even further improved. From top to bottom: an energy screen, blinds, and then another energy screen".
New blinding screen
Because he is the first bell pepper grower with three screen installations, Holland Scherming has applied a new blinding screen especially for this project. Mark: "The diffuse screen with open structure provides 19% light screening, optimal diffusion and sufficient ventilation. The risk of burning crops during spring and summer is significantly reduced. With this, De Groentetuin aims at a maximum production, with maximum capacity and minimal energy consumption."
The installation of this blinding screen in an existing greenhouse with crops, in these times of the corona pandemic, was a challenge. According to Mark everything went smoothly because of the preparation, planning and adjustment.
In autumn, Holland Scherming will also install triple screens in the 4 ha new construction of De Groentetuin.
