The Crop Protection Association (CPA) has outlined its policy priorities for the next UK government

The manifesto calls on the next government to ensure the continued availability of healthy, safe, affordable food for everyone, to ensure policy balances the need to protect and enhance the environment whilst supporting productive agriculture and to adopt a scientific, risk-based approach to regulation.

CPA CEO Sarah Mukherjee said;

“The next government, whatever its political makeup, has an opportunity to develop a joined-up approach to policy-making which ensures we balance the need to protect and enhance our natural environment, whilst supporting sustainable, productive agriculture.

“To achieve this, we have set out three policy priorities which should underpin that commitment:

  • Ensuring we have a resilient, sustainable food system which delivers healthy, safe, affordable food that is accessible to everyone regardless of their socio-economic status.
  • To develop an agricultural policy that balances the need to protect and enhance the environment, whilst supporting sustainable, productive agriculture in the UK, including promoting the role of science and technology in providing solutions that meet this aim.
  • To adopt a scientific, risk-based approach to regulation, one that will encourage companies to invest in the UK as a world-leading research and development hub and potentially give UK farmers and growers earlier access to the latest agricultural technologies whilst maintaining the current high standards of protection for human health and the environment.

“We are on the brink of the next agricultural revolution; advances in science and agricultural technology are helping to ensure a reliable supply of safe and affordable food whilst reducing the impact on the environment and fighting climate change. The next government must support farmers to realise the potential of that revolution through an enabling approach to policymaking.”
