“Overall, the tomato market in China this year has performed significantly better than the last, especially for specialty varieties such as strawberry tomatoes and cherry tomatoes. The seasons of these two varieties are from mid-November to May 1st the coming year and from January to August respectively,” Li Jie, a fruit and vegetable grower and seller in Jinan, Shandong, said.

“Our strawberry tomatoes and cherry tomatoes are grown in greenhouses in Jinan, Shandong. Currently, the average market price of these specialty varieties is about 15 yuan per half a kilo, increasing about 50% compared with 10 yuan in the same period of last year."

“Higher year-on-year prices this year are due to generally low prices from the summer of 2017 to the spring of 2018. Low prices led to reduced plantings in 2018 and rebounds in prices. In addition, heavy rainfall in the summer of 2018 washed away some of the seedlings, and a gap appeared in the vegetable supply chain in the autumn, leading prices to remain high for a long time."
