Noémie Dorion, Martin Emballage:

France: “Demand for wood packaging increases as plastic becomes less popular”

Located in the Deux-Sèvres department, Martin Emballage was originally a family sawmill. Created in 1947, it started designing cheese crates in the 1950s. In the 70s, the company became specialized in light wood packaging. “We can make 13 million packagings per year, all products combined. We make mostly wooden baskets, crates and meal trays, and we also propose customizable accessories to meet our clients’ demand. But our work remains mainly focused on wooden packagings. Each client is free to cover the packaging as they please,” explains Noémie Dorion, from the sales department of Martin Emballage.

80% of the products from Martin Emballage are aimed at the food industry. “We offer packagings for fruits and vegetables, cheeses, salmon at the end of the year, among other products. In parallel, we continue to grow on other markets like horticulture.”

The packagings are used in many fields of activity and the demand has been increasing in recent years. “Our packagings are used as a logistic means for transportation and also to pack value-added products. The wood supplements or replaces the plastic entirely for some of our clients. Thanks to our innovations, Martin is able to propose real alternatives to plastic. Wood is a natural and timeless material popular among consumers.”

In terms of production, Martin Emballage gets its supply locally in order to reduce its environmental footprint. “Of course, we have a sustainable wood harvest system. We only cut the wood within a 100-mile radius of the company. We are lucky to be in a region with a lot of poplar trees of the Marais Poitevin. Poplar trees are cut at the age of 18, and we then subsidize and encourage replanting. In other words, for each tree that is cut, we give money back to the poplar growers for them to plant again. Sometimes, this is also in our interest as we are currently harvesting for the fourth time from parcels that we subsidized.”
