UK: Protected vegetable production down for third year in a row

The UK Government has released horticulture statistics over 2018. These statistics cover area, production, value, imports and exports of horticulture crops from 1985 to 2018. There are estimates for around 50 fruit and vegetables as well as aggregated ornamental production. 

According to the data, the value of protected vegetables fell by 0.6% in 2018 to £331 million.

Production of protected vegetables fell by 5.5% in 2018 to 274 thousand tonnes, with the area used falling by 2.8%, at 803 hectares. This is the third year in a row where protected vegetable production has fallen since peak production in 2015.
