Southern Tomato Virus reported in the UK

A new and previously unrecorded outbreak of the tomato virus ‘Southern Tomato Virus’ (STV) has been reported in the UK. The virus has been previously reported around mainland Europe for some years:

The virus (which displays symptoms akin to ToBRFV/PepMV) does not seem to be very damaging to tomato plants and is thought to be seed borne. Where outbreaks occur the virus is not easily mechanically moved so removal of affected plants is thought to be the best control measure. The British Tomato Growers' Association will publish more details on this virus in future newsletters and work with AHDB to give additional information between times.
