The EDEKA reusable nets are washable, durable and recyclable: Therefore, in contrast to plastic and paper bags, they can be reused. This saves thousands of disposable bags per network. In this way, EDEKA promotes the sale of unpacked fruits and vegetables. In the past three years, EDEKA has already saved around 95 million units.
With the nationwide availability of reusable nets, consumption is to be further reduced. Through a promotion of apples in the free reusable nets, EDEKA wants to promote the awareness and use of reusable nets for customers, in order to reduce the consumption of disposable bags.
Avoiding packaging and optimizing alternative packaging have been important concerns of EDEKA for years. Since 2015, packaging has also been one of EDEKA's key topics in the partnership for sustainability with the WWF. The aim is to avoid or reduce packaging as much as possible for private labels, to use reusable rather than disposable solutions and to pay more attention to recycled materials and recyclability.
When it comes to plastic avoidance, EDEKA has already achieved a great deal for its own labels.
