The Adora tomato, a dark-coloured Marmande variety that was presented at the latest edition of Fruit Attraction, will have a great season start with the integration of the Unica Group. This firm is joining the three founding partners: CASI, Biosabor and La Palma, and together they will soon form a joint company.
With this pioneering joint marketing experience, marked by innovation and the offering a higher added value, they aim to neutralize the increasing competition from countries such as Morocco and Turkey on the European markets, and also improve the crop's profitability, which has been falling at an alarming rate.
In fact, in the current season, peppers have taken the place of tomatoes as the vegetable with the largest planted greenhouse acreage in the province of Almeria.
As a result of the initiative to find more exclusive varieties, premium quality tomatoes have entered the market in recent years, with brands such as Kumato, Mycubies, Lobello, Cherry Sugarino, Delizia and the famous Raf.
This year, the Adora will be present in Madrid, in the next edition of Fruit Attraction, with its own international promotion. The crop has already found its way to supermarket shelves in the UK, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Germany and has received the silver medal in the innovation competition at the latest edition of Fruit Logistica in Berlin. HM.Clause, the seed company backing this project, says that the taste of this tomato "is reminiscent of that of traditional tomatoes" and that it is the first Marmande tomato on the market that can be exported, "as its ripening after the harvest takes place very slowly."
A rule that applies to all batches is that, in order to be marketed under the Adora label, the tomatoes need have over 7 Brix degrees. In this way, an optimal sweetness is guaranteed.
This new tomato from Almería aims to neutralize the trend set by other varieties, which have an attractive appearance, but are disappointing in terms of taste.
