Syngenta's entire tomato team was ready on Wednesday to meet growers and traders in their demo greenhouse in Monster. They had a lot to show and tell their visitors.
Peter Colbers - Romindo
Romindo extremely strong against tip rot
For tomatoes, this summer was the season of truth. Which tomato would perform the best? Exciting times. During the Syngenta open day, Peter Colbers talked about Romindo. Romindo is a loose plum tomato. "Romindo has done very well as tip rot was abundant everywhere, but not with Romindo. Romindo remained very resistant to tip rot. I practically did not see any tip rot in this crop."
The long heat period is difficult for crops, causing stress to the plants. But even during the few days with the highest temperatures, Romindo held its own. In view of climate change, one might expect these kinds of summers more often. Peter: "In the meantime, more and more experience has been gained with the cultivation of Romindo. Major steps have been taken in optimizing the cultivation and thus production. At the moment, the production is rising above the reference varieties."
TCC14533
The first trials of this variety were started in 2017 in lighted cultivation, and last season it was tested in unlighted cultivation as well. That went well. TCC14533 is especially suitable for the Belgian market and fits within the Prince segment. It is a small beef tomato, just like Ebrando and Epundo. TCC14533 has uniform fruits and moreover is suitable for both lighted and unlighted cultivation. Because TCC14533 is strong against tip rot, there is less loss. As a result, the production, in combination with the higher fruit weight, is higher than the reference variety.
Large TOV
Syngenta has a reputable name in the snack segment. From the above it appears that a lot of work is being done to also establish that name in the other segments. Kris Goen: "There are also all kinds of developments in the field of large TOV. A lot of hard work is put in. And we are on the right track. To be continued…”
Nebula
Kris Goen: "If you say Nebula, you’re talking about the best-tasting tomato in the world. In the United Kingdom we use the slogan ‘Nebula ... Cosmic star quality’."
Kris Goen - Belido
During the open day, Syngenta also gave special attention to Belido. Belido is a vine cherry tomato. Kris: "It has a good flavor and presentation, in part thanks to its long trusses. Moreover, the shelf life is excellent, which is important for the packaging market."
