Solexx: 'Better light diffusion and more insulation than polycarbonate'
Solexx is made out of high density polyethylene
Solexx is made out of high density polyethylene. Unlike polycarbonate, the material makes it possible to seal the flutes and consequently trap the air for insulation, preventing moisture from getting in. It also does a very good job at temperature control. “With everyone currently so concerned about energy costs, the value of our product is very high; it is a great option for a quick return on the investment,” says Michelle.
The Solexx material is very flexible and therefore easy to apply to, for example, a hoop house
The company is mainly focused on the U.S. market, although it also has some international customers. Michelle affirms that “our product is especially targeted to growers in areas with steep temperature drops, where the insulation is most useful, but the material will bring beneficial results to almost any crop, regardless of sunshine, shade or temperature.”
“J & K Growers” has applied Solexx to there greenhouse. One of their greenhouse sidewalls is single-wall polycarbonate. They measured decreased growth compared to Solexx for six feet from the polycarbonate wall.
Solexx is available in two formats: 3.5 mm and 5 mm, with the latter being superior for commercial growing, as it is a lot sturdier, allowing for the braces to be set further apart and resulting in a higher energy saving. “Unlike other materials, the UV protection is not a coating, so that it cannot be scratched off, it doesn’t yellow and there is no change in the diffusion. Its slickness also prevents the formation of mildew. Solexx’s properties do not change over time and growers receive a ten year warranty,” assures Michelle.

Adaptive Plastics is currently working on the development of a distributor network to supply its greenhouse products to growers even more efficiently. “Solexx is a fairly new product for commercial growers, but we have plenty of experience with the material in hobby greenhouses. We hope that, as its advantages become better known, Solexx’s popularity will also increase,” concludes the sales manager.
