"Russia needs another 1,800 hectares of vegetable greenhouses"

The 15th specialized Russian greenhouse exhibition, held in Moscow, June 5-6, gathered specialists from Russia, Belarus, the Netherlands, Denmark, China, Italy and other countries. They were greeted by the first Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, Mr. Jambulat Hatuov.

“The development of controlled-environment agriculture is a priority development area for agriculture. Due to the governmental support within the last three years, greenhouse vegetable cultivation has been extensively developing. According to 2017 results, the greenhouse vegetable crop has reached 920 thousand tons and in the current year, it should be a million tons. Our task is to continue constructing new greenhouses and modernize the existing ones in order to provide Russian consumers with high quality produce all year round”, said the Minister in his greeting.

Mr. Jambulat Hatuov together with the General Director of the association Greenhouses of Russia, Ms. Natalia Rogova got acquainted with the exposition and noted that the greenhouse sphere is one of the profitable segments of the agricultural industry. Today Russia can boast its own construction, production, technological development and seed varieties. With the aid of governmental support, the country plans to launch 600 ha of new contemporary greenhouses annually.

“Currently our consumers receive a full range of high quality organic greenhouse vegetables of Russian origin”, noted the Deputy Minister.

Within the last two years, the greenhouse acreage has tripled and vegetable import has halved. According to the experts, in order to meet greenhouse vegetable demand, production needs to be increased with another 1 million tons, which means around 1.8 thousand ha of greenhouses need to be constructed. Construction of new greenhouses and implementation of contemporary technologies has already meant a doubling of the average greenhouse productivity.

The development of greenhouse berry production and growth of export potential of greenhouse vegetable produce are among the strategic goals of the sphere as a part of fulfilling presidential orders on agriculture export development.
