Spain: Granada-based producers assess extent of flood damage
The Federation of Agro-Food Cooperatives (Faeca) will carry out an assessment of the damage to farms, infrastructure and crops affected by floods this weekend in several municipalities of the Vega de Granada, where the green asparagus harvest was in full swing.
According to an initial evaluation, the area flooded includes the municipalities of Huétor Tájar, Láchar, Pinos Puente, Valderrubio and Fuente Vaqueros, although a detailed quantification of the damages will be reported in the coming days with the collaboration of the agricultural cooperatives.
The Federation will also ask the Guadalquivir Hydrographic Confederation (CHG) to clarify the circumstances under which water was discharged from the Cubillas reservoir, which apparently caused the overflow of the riverbed and the flooding of urban areas and fields, according to information from representatives from the area.
Faeca has asked for better planning of the management of the reservoirs in order to prevent situations like this, which in addition to being a risk to the population in urban areas, causes economic losses in agriculture.
If the Confederation is eventually deemed responsible for poor planning of the water discharge, the Federation will demand economic compensations.
