US (MN): Duluth breaks ground on deep winter greenhouse

A parking lot near Denfeld High School is going "from flood to food," in Duluth Mayor Emily Larson's words.

The city had a ceremonial groundbreaking for a new deep-winter greenhouse on 45th Avenue W and Grand Ave. Wednesday. It's the site of a former church that was damaged in the 2012 floods. The city acquired it afterwards.

It will serve as an extension of the Lincoln Park Farmers' Market, which Steve Lorber of the Seeds of Success program said has been a hit.

"It's going to show how strong this food system is becoming and how autonomous this is becoming and how we can show that we can rely on ourselves to produce our own food," Lorber said.

For now, they'll focus on easy-to-grow produce. He said this winter will be an "experimental" phase.

"We're going to be growing a lot of greens right now, something that we can churn out fast and bring to the market, so a lot of salad greens to supplement," Lorber said. "We're also going to be experimenting with different produce like carrots."
