The cover of the new Coviro catalogue
"Things have been difficult for fresh strawberries in the past few months due to overlaps caused by the abnormal weather. Now the time has come to think about the next transplants and about which varieties to choose. Coviro specialises in all kinds of varieties, suitable for any area and cultivation technique," explains sales director Marcello Sbrighi.
Central-northern Italy tends not to produce too early so as to avoid overlapping with production from the south. It uses late varieties or combines remontant varieties with suitable technical measures.
Portola variety
"Demand for remontant varieties has increased in plain areas lately to assure produce for a longer period of time. Transplants are usually carried out in spring and harvesting occurs during summer months. Remontant varieties are transplanted in summer and harvested in spring. Flowers are then cut twice and harvesting is carried out again."
Cabrillo
Portola is a vigorous variety that can blossom even in the warmer periods. Fruits are big with a nice conical shape and lively colours. Cabrillo was instead selected by the University of California. Fruits are big with firm flesh and a long shelf-life. It adapts well to both ground and soil-less cultivation.
Nandi variety
"I won't list all the varieties in our catalogue because those interested can find them on our website or by contacting us. I would like to say, though, that Nandi is very suitable for organic cultivation thanks to its vigour and resistance to leaf and root diseases. Grades are big and uniform, organoleptic qualities are good and the flesh is aromatic and pleasant."
