Last week, Berlin was the capital of the international fresh produce industry for three days. Armed with camera, pen and notepad, the editors of Groentennieuws, HortiDaily, FreshPlaza and AGF combed the convention halls systematically for news and novelties.
Despite a slower starts as a result of the airport strikes in Germany, the Fruit Logistica took of on Wednesday morning for the 25th time. As its name suggests, fresh produce trade and logistics are the main categories represented at the show. Nonetheless, greenhouse technology and other horticultural related technology are on the rise in Berlin. Also this year, the organization devoted more space to horticulture, and at the first floor various dedicated technological halls could be found: 6.1, 7.1 and 8.1, including a special "Tech Stage" for presentations.
Spanish greenhouse builder J.Huete introduced a new automated, oscillating gutter system for strawberry production.
Especially hall 8.1 offered a broad selection of greenhouse builders and suppliers of auxiliary technology. There was not quite a run on it yet, in part because the majority of the Dutch horticultural suppliers continue to exhibit in the Dutch Hall 3.2. Also a few British, Spanish, German and French horticultural suppliers still prefer to join their relations in their own country pavilions. Nonetheless, the ground floor technology halls continue to take more shape every year, which is good.

Speaking to growers and suppliers, we learned that many people, and greenhouse builders in particular, are already extremely busy. Some Dutch greenhouse builders informed us that they were already fully booked for the remainder of the year. “When someone rings us, we first ask them whether they are already our customer. If they are, we listen to what they want. If they are not yet a customer, we actually do not even go to that trouble,” a greenhouse builder explains. “We are fully booked.”

Another good thing to see in Berlin were the introductions of a number new technologies and announcements of new plans and projects. A remarkable new innovation was the oscillating strawberry system at the booth of a Spanish greenhouse builder and a number of new innovations in propagation systems at several tray manufacturers.
