Adaptation of residue free steam sanitation in Southeast Asia

Because of the ban on the usage of methyl-bromide in many Asian countries, soil steaming is a welcome and good alternative for greenhouse farmers to sterilize their operations. This is also the reason why Malaysian supplier Greenhouse Solutions Asia is receiving many orders to install steam units at greenhouse growers throughout Southeast Asia.

Asian perlite Industries Sdn Bhd/Greenhouse Solutions Asia recently delivered its first steaming unit in Asia in Vietnam to a big European seed production company. This is the first unit in South East Asia that they are installing as a dealer for hydroponics, steaming and fumigation consultancy firm Marten Barel. In the coming weeks more units will be installed in Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia.

The steaming unit can be used for soil and bulk steaming. In order to bulk steam the soil, special concrete container holding compartments have been constructed. Steam of 200 degrees Celsius is being used with this special new technique. The soil steaming is done by the usage of metal steaming hoods with pins underneath which inject the steam at a depth between 10 to 30cm depending on the crop or soil structure.

Steaming under the hoods only takes 5 to 7 minutes.

For the grower, a big benefit of using steam sanitation compared to chemical treatments is that they can use the soil again within 12 hours after the treatment.

"It's a residue free treatment without any use of chemicals," explained Luuk Runia of Greenhouse Solutions Asia. "Among scientists and practitioners steaming is known as the best and the most efficient way to cleansoil, potting soils and compost free from diseases and weeds.

Runia summed up the following benefits of the treatment:

  • -Secure and quick annihilation of pathogens
  • -Reliable extermination of weeds and weed seeds.
  • -Cure of soil fatigue
  • -Healthier plants
  • -Quicker growth
  • -Better resistance against diseases
  • -Consistent growth of complete culture
