Netherlands: Gardener's Pride opens new greenhouse

This weekend, several Dutch growers will open their greenhouses to the general public during the 'Kom in de Kas' event. Also the new greenhouse of Gardener's Pride can be visited. Last month, Gardener's Pride Beetgum from Friesland opened its new greenhouse. It’s a closed greenhouse of 5.9 hectares where the family van Overbeek hopes to grow different types of tomatoes, namely: cherry-, plum-, snack-, vine cherry- and plum cherry tomatoes. The official opening was performed by Mayor Mourik of municipality Menaldumadeel.

The opening was a festive occasion.

Closed greenhouse and The New Cultivation
The closed greenhouse has been equipped with a dual-screen system and ventilation jets. In the new greenhouse everything will be grown according to the principles of The New Cultivation. The New Cultivation (HNT) is an energy efficient method of cultivation with optimum production. This new approach avoids unnecessary consumption of fossil fuels. With the new greenhouse, Gardener's Pride puts a big step forward in its commitment to sustainability.

Cultivation with respect for people and the environment
CEO Marco van Overbeek says that at Gardener's Pride, sustainability is of paramount importance. "At Gardener's Pride, we grow with respect for people and the environment. As for the people, we are working with a large number of disadvantaged people. We are very pleased with the commitment, involvement and performance of these employees. This also means that Gardener's Pride employs many people who come from the surrounding area, which is good for local jobs.”

“The new greenhouse,” says Marco, “reduces energy by 20%. It also uses rainwater, saving conventional irrigation water.”

Thosewho want to visit the new greenhouse can do so on April 12, as part of the 'Kom in de Kas' event. The company is open for the general public from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
