A couple of years ago, Jan Spek Rozen introduced a high quality red rose. After four years of breeding and selecting, they conducted test trails in a greenhouse in Ecuador. When the rose flourished, they were amazed. "At first we were disappointed, the flower was different than expected. It did not look 'normal', it looked wild and more like a garden rose. However, after having a closer look we saw something special about the rose; the heart shape."

The heart shape comes from the fact that the rose is cultivated at 2,800 meters above sea level. "Only above this level, the rose will have a heart shaped flower", explains Spek. If a greenhouse is situated in lower areas, the shape of the rose will be 'standard'. "In Asia and Europe the same rose is cultivated but it has a 'standard' shape. Therefore, this rose owns two different names. The heart shaped rose, cultivated in higher areas, is called Rosa Hearts® and the 'standard' shaped rose, cultivated in lower areas, is called Wanted."
In 2013 Rosa Hearts® won the “best of show” at the SAF convention. "This means that it was not only judged as best rose variety from all the exhibit rose varieties but from all species that were sent in."
