In the large two hectare, ten compartment greenhouse a variety of crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers and strawberries, are grown. NERCPA is a joint collaboration between Shanghai Academy for Agricultural Sciences and the local greenhouse builder Dushi Green. The joint project is used for research, demonstration and training to help local Chinese growers learn efficient and sustainable growing techniques. Until recently, increasing vegetable production was paid very little attention in China. However, today product quality and food safety are among top concerns for consumers and in turn efforts to reduce chemical and energy use are playing a more important role than ever.
Situated in the southern part of China, the Shanghai climate experiences four distinct seasons, because of the varied climate a three layer screen system was installed in 2012. For shading an outside SOLARO screen was selected along with an inside combination of TEMPA and LUXOUS screens. The combination guarantees proper climate management, assuring that the operations maximum energy savings potential is met along with ideal light conditions.
“With our climate screens from Svensson we save a lot of energy”, says Xiaotao, Production Assistant at NERCPA. ”They help us optimize the climate in each compartment to suit the variety of crops grown in each. The quality of the Svensson screens is really outstanding and we appreciate the advice and support we’ve receive from Svensson on how to properly use them. We are still learners in screen management why we would like to get even more help and tips from Svensson for our future growing.”
An upcoming trial is scheduled at the South Pole to evaluate growing leafy vegetables in greenhouses. "The climate control in a greenhouse located in such an extreme condition is of course a challenge. It will be exciting to see whether we will succeed”, says Xiaotao.
