"We are currently performing transplants, whereas the Verona and Lazio areas are still producing," explains Mario Incardona, administrator of the company.
Maintaining a good standard means committing to a tough job started during the previous years: "of 16 ha in total, 13 were transplanted with aubergines, 1 with cucumbers and 2 with tomatoes. In addition to round, oblong, purple and streaked aubergines, the new variety is called Karina and is quite a niche product."
90% of the round aubergines Gold Green is transplanting are of the Velia variety, created by the Enza Zaden seed company. It is a round black shiny variety with no thorns.
In May, Mario protested against the ridiculously low prices by taking the produce back to the fields. "Already in January, we could not sell one kg of aubergines at more than €0.40/kg. They can't always do that to producers, as cultivating a kg of aubergines or tomatoes costs €0.45/kg on average."
Company news
In addition to the fresh produce, the company is also working on introducing a processed line called Verde Oro. "We are almost ready, and we should start harvesting the fresh produce at the same time."
"We are always looking for local producers willing to work with us as, the bigger the volume, the higher our bargaining power. We already work with quite a few selected companies that produce aubergines just like we do, i.e. respecting the specifications."
