US (VA): Greenhouse range at Lynchburg Grows added to Virginia's historic register

A decades-old greenhouse range now maintained by Lynchburg Grows has been added to the Virginia Landmarks Register, the state's historic resources department announced Thursday. The property at 1339 Englewood St. — which was the Doyle Florist Inc. / H.R. Schenkel Inc. Greenhouse Range and was purchased by Lynchburg Grows in 2004 — "represents 80 years of activity in the cut-flower industry in the U.S.," the Virginia Department of Historic Resources wrote in a news release.

"That industry originated in the 17th century and became an important part of agricultural commerce in the U.S. during the 20th century," it continued. "The U.S.-based industry peaked in the in 1990, and then nearly collapsed in later years due to competition from international markets. The Doyle-Schenkel Greenhouse Range reflects the industry’s modern period of expansion, success, and decline nationally."
