US (TX): Damaged Village Farms’ Marfa greenhouse reopens

Two years after a hailstorm destroyed 80 acres of a Village Farms greenhouse in Marfa and the ensuing battle with the company’s insurance providers, the doors to a newly constructed 60-acre greenhouse at the site is now open and producing at full capacity.

Though still 20 acres shy of its original capacity, the greenhouse’s yield with be unaffected due to an additional 6 feet added to the building’s walls, Village Farms Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Douglas Kling said. The revamped structure, he added, also comes with over $1 million in new equipment in the pack house.

The reopening of the Marfa greenhouse will also create 80 new positions in the area, which they are currently looking to staff, helping to fill the economic void created by the closure of the damaged building. The closure affected not only the county tax roll, but also the school district, as school-aged children were moved to different districts.
