Grower Arjen Boer, of Boer & Den Hoedt:

"Water-cooled LEDs give our company an edge"

The growers of Boer & Den Hoedt from Ridderkerk see many benefits of LED lighting compared to traditional sonT lamps. Grower Arjan Boer is now a well-known ambassador of LED. In his company, water-cooled LED Grow Lights by Lemnis Oreon were installed. PB Techniek was responsible for installing the LED fixtures.

In a few statements, Arjan points out the benefits for his company:

  •  "The quality of our lettuce has improved. The crop is more compact, the leaf is firmer and has longer shelf life."
  • "Edges are no longer a problem. The radiant heat from SonT gave these problems. Now virtually no leaves are affected.”
  •  "Our customers (i.e. supermarkets) are increasingly demanding environmentally conscious products. The water-cooled LED fixtures by Lemnis Oreon make for a 50% reduction of energy consumption."

Boer & Den Hoedt grows mainly lettuce. In September last year, the company combined new construction work (9000 m2) with the instalment of LED-lights by PB Techniek. Paul Brabander of PB Techniek: “At the moment, we have the most experience in implementing this technique. Installation is going well, and we’re very pleased with both the quality and the performance of these new fixtures. The results of the new generation LED Grow Lights of Lemnis Oreon really do exceed everyone’s expectations, and the results were already high: the measured value after delivery was 2.4 micro Moll / Joule. In this way we hope to provide the technology with a new push in this sector."

Boer & Den Hoedt in Ridderkerk was among the first companies in the Netherlands interested in LED. As early as 2009, the first few Lemnis LED-lights replaced the existing fixtures. Although crops responded well to the LED-lights the additional lighting also caused more shadows. With the ‘second generation’ fixtures, this problem has been solved. The new lamps are installed in place of the conventional lamps. Also, the lights have been redesigned to make them even more compact. Gert Grolleman of Lemnis Oreon: “Compared to the 2013 version, this lamp has 30% less shading, while adding 5% to the light output.”

Later this year, Boer & Den Hoedt will likely replace the remaining fixtures with the ones from Lemnis Oreon.

Both Lemnis Oreon and PB Techniek will attend the upcoming Greentech. Their stand number is 11-200.
