Cindy Flynn, Gallina USA:

'Polycarbonate 250 times stronger than glass, lighter and safer'

Gallina USA was established in 1960 by Pier Aulo Gallina in Italy to produce polycarbonate plastic materials for the automotive industry. Since 2003, Gallina USA has been operating out of Wisconsin.

Due to Gallina Policarb’s greater impact resistance over glass, it has become very popular for use in greenhouses. In addition to the horticulture industry, their products are well suited for sunrooms, canopies, pool enclosures, window replacement, garage doors, and hurricane protection. Gallina’s modular products, their arcoPlus line, is well suited for skylights, vertical walls, and industrial roofing, to list a few.

Gallina Policarb has a 10 year warranty on its UV protection to prevent yellowing and there have been claims by some growers in the field that it is withstanding upwards of 15-20 years. There are also options to include an anti-fog coating that prevents condensation from dripping overhead.

Cindy Flynn, Gallina USA’s Inside Sales Manager, included that polycarbonate is approximately 250 times stronger than glass and 6 times lighter and is considered safer than glass in the event of breakages.

Flynn also stated that, “sales are increasing substantially, and as each year passes, greenhouse companies are realizing all the safety benefits that come along with using polycarbonate over glass since it is lighter in weight, is easier to install and maintain, and in the event of hail damage, won’t shatter on impact.”

The horticultural portion of Gallina USA’s business started off as a very small part of their revenue, and Flynn admits that it took a while to catch on with growers and greenhouse builders and only really started to take off over the last five years.

Since then, horticultural sales of Gallina Policarb have doubled each year, with most greenhouse companies regularly buying up the 8mm Twinwall and 8mm Triplewall sheets. In addition, they also produce 16mm sheets for more northern structures, and Flynn says, some companies have been experimenting with 25mm sheets for greenhouses being built in the very far north.

“We don’t deal directly with a lot of it [the end users], we manufacture the product and it’s the customers who purchase the material that come up with all the interesting ideas,” she said.
