Netherlands: Microsoft datacenter to deliver energy to greenhouses

Microsoft is seeking to invest some two billion Euro in the construction of a new data center on Agriport A7 in Middenmeer. According to the plans, Microsoft wants to buy greenhouse electricity through Energy Combination Wieringermeer and deliver back energy to the growers. The company will additionally procure 40 hectares of land in the area.

Plans for a data center at Agriport A7 have been considered before: there has been talk of setting up Parthenon Data Centres since 2008. These, however, have always been postponed.

According to Kielstra the plans were postponed, not cancelled. He assumes that the data center will be built within five years. "The preconditions for the project are good." According to an insider, Parthenon already invested over a million in the plan.
