Mexico: Zitácuaro region now main producer of greenhouse ornamentals

Zitácuaro has become one of the main producers of greenhouse ornamentals, allowing it to increase its productivity and make the activity more profitable, pointed out the Rural Development secretary, Ramón Cano Vega. Greenhouse production has turned Zitácuaro in a national leader in the sales of poinsettias. Its production, in the 2012 season, was of 6 million plants, which generated quite a large income.

Zitácuaro, with around 80 hectares of greenhouses, gives priority to the production of flowers, mainly poinsettia, although geraniums and roses are also cultivated. This activity created 1,336 jobs in the region, according to data provided by Ramón Cano.

In fact, just in the case of poinsettias, there are 550 producers devoted to this activity, which benefits no less than 150 families. The greenhouses are mainly located in San Felipe, Curungueo and Ziráhuato.
