Spain: Fito launches new range of middle and late cucumbers

Fito launches new cucumber seed for the middle and late sowing range. Germán Victoria, sales representative at Fito in Almeria, explains the range: "The seed is suitable for the middle and late sowing period, with a low plant, dark leaves and excellent resistant to yellowing of the leaf, with dark fruits and a groove formation during the entire growth cycle.

A new short cucumber variety is Baezal, with excellent color and high production. A new French cucumber variety is Almenara, a fast-growing plant (7 to 10 days faster than other breeds), with good quality fruit (in terms of color and shape) and a very healthy plant.

The new seeds are being used in Almeria. Most producers are satisfied with the result and will use it again next season. Juan José García Villegas, producer in San Agustin, El Ejido, has 4.5 ha greenhouse construction for cucumbers and peppers. He used the new Caronte variety in the previous season on 4 hectares: "I am very happy with these new cucumber varieties," he states. "They seem to be doing very well."

Antonio Suarez Llobregat, producer in Balerma (El Ejido) with 13,000 meters of Dutch cucumber cultivation, shares this view. He piloted with Caronte for two seasons and now he has the whole greenhouse dedicated to the variety. "The Caronte cucumber is a sturdy, powerful variety, suitable for winter, maintaining its quality to the end of the cycle and remarkably free of disease.”
