Bushel Boy Farms grower Marco de Bruin, Minnesota:

"US: "Healthier and darker crop with vertical air circulation system"

In the nurseries of tomato grower Bushel Boy Farms, vertical air circulation systems were installed a few years ago. Marco de Bruin of Bushel Boy: "Since that time, the crop is markedly healthier and darker. The plant is more balanced. Both qualitatively and quantitatively, production has taken some giant leaps forward, largely due to our climate."

Three years ago, production supervisor Mark Vergeldt first visited the floor at Bushel Boy. He recommended using the Verti-Fan system by Van der Ende Group. He thought better returns could be achieved deploying the new vertical climate control. Owatonna, Minnesota has a continental climate, which became more and more aggressive in the colder months. Through the Verti-Fan system, they can now avoid harsh climates. Marco took Mark’s advice and is pleased with the results so far. After a two-year trial period, the nurseries are now fully equipped with the Verti-Fan system.

"Now we have 1 Verti-Fan per 400 m2. The air mixes well in the greenhouse,” says Marco, who’s considering expanding the system even more. The final advantage of this vertical air circulation system, he claims, is that workers find it much more pleasant to work in the nursery. "There are fewer peaks in temperature and there is always air movement in the greenhouse."
