EU: Varnish for food cans made from tomato waste

Every year after the Tomatina festival, the Spanish town of Buñol is completely covered with tomatoes, which are simply washed away. A shame, because this kind of waste can come in handy someday...

The EU-funded project BIOCOPAC, involving 12 partners from 6 countries (Italy, Greece, Spain, France, Czech Republic and Liechtenstein), has found a very innovative way to recycle waste from the food processing industry. The consortium has developed a varnish based on materials from tomato waste, intended for the inside and outside of cans. This environmentally friendly packaging is less dangerous to the health of the consumer, better for the environment and competitive compared to other packaging.
