Semillas Fito releases new pepper varieties
Semillas Fito’s pepper variety for greenhouses is still a safe bet in the area of Almeria, be it Lamuyo, California or Italian peppers. Starting with the Lamuyo where Fitó is the market leader, Salvador Peramo, Solanaceae Product Manager for Semllas Fitó, talked about Fitó’s novelties for this campaign: "the two major developments for the next Lamuyo campaign in Almería are Marquesado and Monarcado. The first is for extra-early transplants and Monarcado for semi-early transplants. Both strains are characterized by how easy they set with heat, how quickly they turn red and their resistances (Tm: 0-3 and TSWV: P0 in the case of Marquesado and Tm: 0-3, TSWV: P0 and PVY: 0 for the Monarcado)."
Marquesado Lamuyo Pepper
For Salvador Peramo, these new varieties perfectly complete the entire Lamuyo cycle: "At this time we can say that Fito is leader of Lamuyo peppers in Almería because, among other things, our lamuyos range covers all the segments of planting in this area. Detailing the current range, we have Marquesado for extra early sowings, Soberano and Monarcado for early sowings, Segura for mid-term sowings and Ebro for later sowings".
"We have varieties that adapt to the needs of the production chain: the lamuyo Samblas and California Maestral are for greenhouses, for the countryside our range of lamuyos is comprised of Alcudia, Ramonete, Manolo and Pairal, our offer is completed with the Californias Tomelloso Carisma, Castelo and Castilla".
Delux in California yellow
The yellow Delux variety, which has doubled the seeds sold last season for their good results, is outstanding. According to Francisco Javier Rodriguez Usero, from Fitó’s commercial department, "Delux is being very well received because of its excellent post-harvest conservation that allows it to be to picked up in perfect conditions until the end of March, which benefits cooperatives and distributors so they can reach all markets and benefits the farmer who can stock more pepper if prices are low and wait for them to go up." Delux is a California yellow pepper for transplants from July 20 to August 10.
In addition, Fito maintains their California supply, featuring popular red varieties such as Olvera and Abbey. Olvera is a variety for mid-term sowings with resistance to L3 and Spotted, with an excellent quality and productivity. Abbey is for semi-late sowing. It has a good size plant, exceptional fruit for export quality and is resistant to L4 and Spotted.
There is also an interesting range of Italian pepper varieties that meet the current market demands such as Aneto, Gredos or Beret within Fito’s catalog of peppers.
Varieties for the Murcia area
Following Fito’s philosophy of developing specific varieties for each, there are several varieties of peppers in the area of Murcia that are having a major success. As Salvador Paredes, head of Fitó in this area, said, "we have varieties that adapt to the needs of the production chain: the lamuyo Samblas and california Maestral are for greenhouses, for the countryside our range of lamuyos is comprised of Alcudia, Ramonete, Manolo and Pairal, our offer is completed with the Californias Tomelloso Carisma, Castelo and Castilla. This wide range allows farmers and traders to get a seed that is perfect for their specific needs."
These varieties have common characteristics such as being all created by Fito, in search of early yields and quality. An example is Maestral "which apart from yielding excellent quality fruits, is resistant to the different varieties of the TSW and TMV viruses, and can produce in adverse conditions of low light and low temperatures."
Salvador Paredes also highlights the lamuyo Samblas variety, which "offers an earliness and quality highly valued by farmers. Plants respond significantly better than other traditional varieties in depleted soils. Their postharvest consistency and their ability to maintain their taste and odor, hardness and flavor for a longer time, allows them to have greater exposure on the supermarket shelves."
Finally, the countryside varieties in Murcia, such as Alcudia and Ramonete, are providing a high quality of fruit: bright red, thick-walled, smooth fruit and a traditional pepper aroma and flavor, suitable to be used in fresh and for the industry.
