NL: Sensor startup shuts down: "What we aimed for is not within reach"

Dutch sensor start-up Plense Technologies has announced that it is closing its doors. The company, based in Delft, The Netherlands, shared the news on LinkedIn.

Plense was founded in February 2023. Just over a year later, it officially entered the horticultural tech market, focusing on the development and testing of its own ultrasound sensor.

"When we started this journey, our goal was to learn as much as we could from the market and tackle a major challenge," the company wrote in a farewell message. "Along the way, we validated several pain points in horticulture—but unfortunately, they weren't problems our technology could solve."

Although the team achieved a few technical breakthroughs, they discovered there wasn't strong demand for those particular solutions.

"We've spent the past two and a half years doing everything we could to bridge that gap," Plense continued. "But we've now come to realize that commercialization is still a long way off, and what we set out to achieve simply isn't within reach at this time."

In the coming weeks, the company will wrap up ongoing projects and focus on transferring knowledge to anyone who may benefit from their work.

"With heavy hearts, but also excitement about what the future holds, we want to thank everyone who spoke with us, listened to us, explained things, helped us, and challenged us along the way."
