Semillas Fitó has just launched the cucumber season in the coastal areas of Granada and Almeria, Spain, and the goal is clear: obtaining a quality and profitable production that is also safe against growing threats, such as viruses, diseases and demanding climate conditions. This season, the seed company, which has a long history in cucumber variety improvement, has a range consisting mostly of varieties that aim to meet the sector's actual needs.
The range is headed by the Dutch-type cucumbers Nairobi, Helsinki and (the new) Moscú; the French-type cucumber Normande, as well as the new Caudal gherkin, a variety that stands out for its resistance and fruit quality.

Dutch cucumber: balance, resistance and stability in the production
The Nairobi variety has been designed for transplanting from August to early September, and in spring, from February to May. The plant has a short internode, perpendicular leaves and a dark color that gives light better access to the fruit thanks to Smart Q technology. "This translates into a healthier plant and more efficient handling," says Alberto Lasheras, Crop Advisor for cucumber and zucchini at Semillas Fitó. The Nairobi has an excellent performance against key viruses such as CVYV, CYSDV and CGMMV, and is very productive in short and medium cycles.
For its part, Helsinki is a variety designed for autumn transplants, especially October and November, and stands out as one of the most complete on the market. It has five resistances (including New Delhi) and guarantees stable yields, with no ups and downs in production. "Its main strength is that it's always producing. It doesn't have peaks and ensures stability, which gives great peace of mind to the grower," says Lasheras.
The newest addition to the range this season is the Moscú, a variety that can be transplanted from September 20 until well into November. The Moscú represents an evolution of classic varieties, but with updated resistances and progressive agronomic behavior, especially in the formation of lateral stems. "It is a modern variety, but with the essence of traditional plants in terms of balance, and this is appreciated by producers," says the expert.

Caudal: new gherkin with high resistance
Semillas Fitó is also expanding its gherkin range with Caudal, a versatile variety that can be transplanted almost all year round, from January to October. The Caudal offers a fruit of great commercial quality, with a well-defined spine, clean closure without star marks, and a sweet flavor without any bitterness.

Its most outstanding feature is its resistance to the CGMMV virus, which isn't common in this segment and gives growers extra security and guarantees. "We are dealing with a variety that not only delivers in terms of production, but also offers protection against one of the crop's main threats," says Lasheras.
An extensive and reputable range aiming to give peace of mind
Besides these new additions, Semillas Fitó's range includes other varieties of recognized prestige and good performance. Its range is thus suited to all cycles and types of farms. The season is kicking off in an increasingly difficult context for producers, with greater pressure from viruses, pests and diseases in a globalized environment.
"Having a variety without any resistance today can mean the loss of an entire crop. That is why it is essential to choose materials that combine production, quality and protection. That's where Semillas Fitó can make a difference. We provide real solutions to producers, with varieties they can trust so that their crops will be profitable and they won't have to worry," says Alberto Lasheras.
