Russia recognizes bananas as agricultural crop to reduce its reliance on imports

Bananas have been officially classified as an agricultural product in Russia, according to a government decree published on the legal information portal. The move means bananas are now on par with traditional crops, such as potatoes, grains, and apples.

This status allows bananas to be cultivated not only by agricultural enterprises but also by research institutes and educational institutions in the agro-industrial sector. They are also now eligible for state support and subsidies.

The idea of growing bananas in Russia, while seemingly exotic, is not new. In March 2025, Sergey Izmalkov, Minister of Agriculture of Stavropol Krai, proposed adding the fruit to the official list of crops. At the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Governor Vladimir Vladimirov announced that the first harvest of domestically grown bananas could be expected as early as 2027.

According to Vladimirov, preparations for cultivation are underway, and greenhouse conditions in certain regions could make the project viable. Federal Agriculture Minister Oksana Lut supported the initiative, pointing to Kazakhstan's success with industrial greenhouse banana production as a model. She emphasized that with proper support, Russia could reduce its reliance on imports and develop a local market for exotic fruits.
