Wadsworth launches Juniper:

Adding value to entry-level greenhouse automation

Wadsworth Control Systems has introduced a new climate control solution for growers seeking simplicity, reliability, and affordability. Designed to bridge the gap between thermostats and Wadsworth's advanced Seed platform, Juniper is ideal for high schools, small operations, and budget-conscious growers who want professional-grade automation without unnecessary complexity.

"We developed Juniper for growers who need reliable entry-level environmental control", says Patricia Dean, CEO of Wadsworth. "It delivers the essentials, done well, with the Wadsworth name and support behind it."

Core functionality, smart design
Juniper manages two stages of heating, four of cooling, and two modulating outputs for vents or curtains. Vents can be staged or temperature-modulated, and curtains can operate for both heat retention and cooling. Three configurable setpoint periods with split heating/cooling targets and ramping allow growers to fine-tune their environment throughout the day.

Growers upgrading from thermostats, Wadsworth's legacy STEP 50, or the more recent STEP Up control are seeing vastly improved functionality. Many appreciate the timed override, which automatically returns equipment to scheduled operation, preventing the common issue of leaving a toggle switch in manual mode. And if they still revert to using the toggle switches, there is a manual switch indicator, which alerts users when toggles are left in manual mode and the system can't function as intended.

"Many growers struggle with outdated or overly complex systems," Patricia notes. "Juniper is a streamlined entry point into automation with no unnecessary features, just the essentials done well."

Modern interface and remote access
Ease of use is central to Juniper's design. Its touchscreen interface is intuitive, with color coding for at-a-glance greenhouse status: red for heating, blue for cooling, and green when conditions are on target. A mobile and desktop app is available for all major operating systems, and remote access is enabled via the optional Wadsworth.Cloud subscription.

Users can choose light or dark display modes, Imperial or metric units, and customize layout and scaling for improved accessibility.

Wadsworth.Cloud connectivity for real-time data, push alarm notifications, and unlimited history. This functionality has made Juniper the clear choice for many current customers.

"Customers are ordering Juniper to replace STEP Up and STEP 50 controls," says Patricia. "They prefer the cleaner interface, app access, and remote alarms that let them stay connected from anywhere."

Security, insight, and peace of mind
Juniper includes user authentication, a change log, alarm output, and warnings when switches are not in auto mode. A backup diagnostic screen and override buttons provide additional peace of mind.

The system tracks temperature, humidity, and equipment run times, with 30 days of onboard history and an unlimited option through the cloud. Users can export snapshots and data for backups and analysis.

"It's automation without overcomplication," Patricia adds. "And it gives growers the data they need to make smart decisions."

Part of a larger ecosystem
Juniper complements Wadsworth's flagship Seed system, which integrates advanced features like lighting, irrigation, fertigation, and HVAC control. While Seed supports more complex operations, Juniper offers a strong starting point, with a pathway for expansion as needs grow.

"Juniper fills the space between thermostats and full automation," Patricia explains. "It supports growers at every stage of their journey."

Market feedback
Early feedback has been enthusiastic. Following a preview at Cultivate, Wadsworth has already delivered Juniper to schools and smaller growers. Harry Vlotter of Blooma Farms shares:

"I'm already a big fan of the Juniper control! As a grower, this display tells me everything I want to know when I enter the greenhouse."

Future-focused
Wadsworth is developing new modules for Juniper to ensure long-term flexibility and value. Meanwhile, the Seed system continues evolving, integrating with Philips GrowWise lighting, Apogee Guardian and Aranet wireless sensors, and HE Anderson fertigation systems.

"Our roadmap for both controls includes new modules and tools to help growers of all sizes optimize their environment, conserve resources, and increase yields," Patricia confirms. "All with the reliability and support Wadsworth is known for."
