In New Zealand, a period of stable weather has led to an increase in vegetable production, resulting in a decline in prices, as reported by Stats NZ, with vegetable prices dropping nearly 20% in March year-on-year.
Jay Clarke of Woodhaven Gardens in Horowhenua, which contributes about 10% to the country's fresh-cut greens supply, indicated that the growing conditions have been favorable since September, leading to higher yields and an oversupply in the market. This has not been matched by consumer demand, with Clarke noting a surplus of approximately 10% more product than usual and a significant decrease in wholesale prices, ranging from 25% to 30% lower than the previous year.
The situation presents challenges for growers, who are also facing rising costs for fuel, freight, and labor. The potential of having to plow unsold vegetables back into the ground is a concerning prospect.
