VBT figures week 16:

Tomato prices lag behind previous years

Last week, the average prices for cucumbers and tomatoes did not decline further. That's the silver lining after reviewing the VBT figures for week 16. On the downside, the average price for tomatoes remains below the five-year average, with kilo prices of 1.10 euros for loose tomatoes and just over 1.06 euros for vine tomatoes at the Belgian auction clocks.

An average of 28 euro cents per cucumber is, on the other hand, above average. With this price, the market avoids the steep decline that began in mid-April last year.

After weeks of rising prices, the introduction of larger volumes of bell peppers (BelOrta reports this week the 'first large volumes of yellow and red) led to a drop in the average price for the first time in week 16. Both red (2.22 euros per kilo) and yellow (2.61) saw a slight decrease. The price for green, however, increased to 1.90. For red, this means that the average price at the VBT falls below the five-year average.'

The average price for eggplants in week 16 is 87 euro cents per kilo, and the piece price for green zucchini is 42 euro cents. In both cases, there was a price decrease compared to week 15. Other greenhouse products, however, saw price increases, with an overall positive trend compared to week 15 for lettuce and also for greenhouse cauliflower, as well as for strawberries, where the average price once again exceeds 6 euros per kilo.
