Gavilán cherry plum tomato, Asterix plum tomato and Colima F1 papaya attracted much attention at ExpoCherry-Costa de Granada

The inaugural edition of ExpoCherry–Costa de Granada, held recently at the Municipal Pavilion of La Rábita, in the province of Granada, truly served to showcase the dynamism and innovation that characterize the agricultural sector and underscored the importance of agriculture in this region.

One of the most outstanding participants at the event was CapGen Seeds, a young Almerian seed house, which showcased its portfolio of products already established in the area, like the large caliber Obelix plum tomato, as well as its latest innovations in seeds for the Costa de Granada.

Among the flagship products presented by the company, two tomato varieties caught the public's attention. One of them was the Gavilán cherry plum tomato. "This is a date-shaped variety with an average weight of about 15 grams, boasting a red hue with exceptional shine and firmness. It is ideal for organic cultivation thanks to its resistance package (TYLCV, Fol: 0-2, ToMV, Va, Vd, Pf, Pst, Sl, Lt)," said Alejandro Montes, from the Marketing department of CapGen Seeds.

"The other tomato that caught the visitors' attention was the Asterix, a medium to medium-large caliber plum tomato which is highly suited for export, thanks to the quality of its fruits and its long post-harvest shelf life. Its fruits are oval-shaped, intensely red, and notably shiny. This tomato stands out not only for its quality but also for the uniformity of the fruits throughout the entire cycle," he said.

"Both tomatoes, which feature resistance to the tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV), caught the attention of producers and technicians from leading cooperatives attending the fair, earning praise for their excellent taste and quality. Producers and technicians present at the 1st ExpoCherry 2024 expressed great interest in these varieties, recognized for their potential to meet the challenges of agriculture in the region," said Alejandro Montes.

The presentation of the Colima F1 papaya was another highlight at the stand of CapGen Seeds. "This variety has an optimal size, ranging from 0.8 kg to 1.2 kg, making it an ideal choice for markets demanding medium-sized papayas. Moreover, its average soluble solids content of 14-15° Brix ensures a sweet and exquisite flavor that will satisfy even the most demanding palates," he said.

"The positive response from attendees was a testament to CapGen Seeds' reputation as a breakthrough player in the development of high-quality seeds," said Alejandro Montes.
