Canada: Expensive winter for Quebec's greenhouse growers

The extreme cold leaves little respite for greenhouse producers in Quebec for whom low temperatures mean high bills. The more glacial the temperatures, the more energy costs can hugely exceed expectations. Stéphane Bernard and Christiane Lessard are in full production over this period, where in the ''3 Clefs'' greenhouses numerous vegetables are growing. Mr Bernard admits that it has been a hard winter, ''in December we went through a period with very little light and it was very cold. In January, the cold was very much present''.

His greenhouses are heated with natural gas, a more appropriate energy for the size of his business he says. However, the severe weather has an important effect on operating costs, ''heating makes up 40-50% of our expenses. It is our largest expense'' he explains.
