Netherlands: Revised heating system for organic cress grower Biosfeer

Organic grower Biosfeer Groede is growing 90 different cresses, like orach, leek, scorzonera, cabbage and watercress on an acreage of 500 sqm. Grower Nic Sinke of this herb farm wants to cultivate everything organically and therefore he is not using hydroponics, as this is not allowed in Europe. "By growing in the soil, we think that the shelf life of our product is better and we can give our customers a better tasting product," the grower claims.

The customers of the grower are 30 Michelin Star awarded restaurants and suppliers of herb extracts. Previously the cresses were grown under plastic to protect them against frost. When the frost arrived, the customers had to go elsewhere. With the installation of a new heating system the grower can now also grow during the winter.

Agricon Horty Systems recently installed the revised SMD heating system. The tubes hang above the cresses and the altitude can be increased or decreased as required.
