Urban farming in Vancouver

Canada: Greenhouse built on top of parking garage

In Vancouver, Canada, Van der Hoeven Horticultural Projects has realized an impressive piece of Urban Agriculture. On top of a parking garage in downtown Vancouver a 528-sqm foil greenhouse has been erected. The greenhouse has been equipped with double F-clean foil.

This highly durable foil with high UV transmittance, has also been used in a number of prestigious commercial construction projects, like the Allianz Arena in Munich and the Water Cube in Beijing. The UV permeability and the practical applicability (in two layers, and therefore highly energy-efficient) were decisive factors in choosing the roof and wall coverings. The greenhouse will be internally equipped with a special system for lettuce cultivation, which will be grown in several layers, so that a high coverage per m² is attained. "We expect more of these special projects in the near future. Again Van der Hoeven proves that it is able to render the wishes of the customer into the best workable solution," according to the newsletter by Van der Hoeven.
