Spain: Researchers study soilless development of tomato varieties

Since 1974, the Torre Pacheco Integrated Center for Agrarian Training and Experiences (CIFEA) has been training the generations that promote agriculture in one of the most fertile areas of Europe, the Region of Murcia, known as the orchard of this continent. Their experience, therefore, is extensive, developing activities that demonstrate innovative and technological transfer between researchers, farmers and companies.

To carry out this research task with various tomato varieties, the Torre Pacheco CIFEA uses two of the Hydroponic Systems drainage cultivation and collection units: HS Premium System, a soil gutter with Spacer; and HS Evolution System, a metal gutter with integrated Spacer that is placed in greenhouses on fixed or adjustable posts, or hanging from the greenhouse roof structure. In this case they opted for adjustable posts, with which it is possible to set an optimal slope so that the drains leave the crop line and do not produce waterlogging that could affect the health of the plants.

Among the different varieties that grow at the CIFEA with satisfactory results, tomato plants free of diseases and root stress, the cherry or tomatoes, the Canarian tomato, bull's eggs, blue tomato, on the vine, Muchamiel, ox heart, raf stand out. , pear, and so on.

Maximum yields
These European researchers are not the only ones who validate the performance of the Hydroponic Systems company's systems. International experts have also validated the impact of growing gutters in substrate on improving the productivity of greenhouses and tunnels.

The results speak for themselves: plants grown in these systems exhibit health and vigor, resulting in significantly higher yields. Studies indicate an increase in production ranging from 3% to an impressive 12%, with potential for even greater profits. This data has been measured in comparison to other average data collected with similar growing systems from other manufacturers.

An interesting case is that of a Brazilian greenhouse intended for research that produces tomatoes on Spacer Premium, achieving a real yield of 40 kg per m2. The agricultural engineering professors responsible for this greenhouse confirm the previous data: using Spacer from Hydroponic Systems, the plants are able to increase their production with respect to both soil cultivation and other hydroponic cultivation models that can be found on the market, given that do not suffer root stress or diseases due to contact with drains and flooding.

The agricultural future, in the hands of CIFEA
The CIFEA is a specialized center that is committed to innovation and sustainability in agriculture. Both researchers and students, future agricultural technicians, use Hydroponic Systems systems to carry out their hydroponics tests. This practical experience allows them to become familiar with the latest technologies and cultivation techniques, preparing them to face the challenges of the future of agriculture.

CIFEA continues to lead the way towards more sustainable and productive agriculture in the Region of Murcia. Through research, training and the adoption of new technologies, the next generation of agricultural technicians is being prepared to face the challenges of the future and guarantee food security in the region.
